Step 3: Plan explicit teaching and guided practice
Once the intention is selected, ask for a sequence that makes teacher and student roles clear. A practical structure is:
- Do now or retrieval: connect to prior learning without turning the opening into a long test.
- Purpose: state the lesson intention and success criteria.
- Model: think aloud while demonstrating the knowledge or skill.
- Deconstruct: identify the features, decisions or reasoning students need to notice.
- Guided practice: work through an example with prompts and feedback.
- Independent or collaborative application: students demonstrate the intended learning.
- Review: students explain what changed in their understanding and the teacher records evidence.
Request teacher questions at each transition. Then remove any question that does not help reveal student thinking. Generic prompts such as “Does everyone understand?” provide little evidence. Ask for an explanation, a comparison, a prediction or a justification instead.
For practical and performance subjects, specify equipment, safety procedures and setup time. For science, mathematics and technology, verify every example or calculation. For English and humanities, check that texts, terms and historical claims are accurate and age appropriate.
Step 4: Build assessment evidence from the outcome
NSW school programs often need a clear relationship between syllabus outcomes, learning activities and assessment. Ask the AI to map the lesson’s checks for understanding to the exact evidence you want.
A useful output includes:
- a hinge question or short check during teaching
- a student product, explanation, performance or observation
