Start with the official curriculum

Open the Australian Curriculum Version 9.0 website before opening your AI planner. Select the learning area or subject, year level and relevant strand. Read the content description in its surrounding context, including the achievement standard and any elaborations that help explain the intent.

The Australian Curriculum is organised in three dimensions:

  • learning areas and subjects;
  • general capabilities; and
  • cross-curriculum priorities.

That structure does not mean every lesson must explicitly address every dimension. It means you can make deliberate connections where they genuinely support the learning. Record the exact curriculum reference you intend to teach. Do not rely on an AI tool to invent or reconstruct a code from memory.

Step 1: Define the lesson brief

Before generating anything, write a compact brief. Include details that an experienced colleague would need in order to help you plan:

  • year level and learning area or subject
  • lesson length and place in the unit
  • content description or other official reference
  • the relevant part of the achievement standard
  • what students already know
  • likely misconceptions or language demands
  • classroom resources and technology available
  • grouping or support considerations; and
  • what evidence you want to collect by the end

For example:

Year 4 Mathematics, 60 minutes. Students are learning to compare fractions with related denominators. Use the selected Australian Curriculum content description and the relevant achievement standard. Students can represent unit fractions but need practice explaining comparisons. Use mini-whiteboards and fraction strips. Include a model, guided practice, independent task and an exit check. Avoid assuming every student has a device.

The more concrete the brief, the more useful the draft. Keep student information general and de-identified. A lesson plan rarely needs names, medical information or individual records.

Step 2: Ask for the learning intention and success criteria

Ask the AI to propose a learning intention in student-friendly language and success criteria that can be observed. Then compare those statements with the curriculum reference.

A strong learning intention describes the learning, not just the activity. “We are learning to compare fractions and justify our thinking” is more useful than “We are doing a fraction worksheet”. Success criteria should describe evidence such as representing, explaining, calculating, identifying or applying—not simply completing a page.

Use a prompt such as:

Using the curriculum reference supplied above, draft one learning intention and three success criteria. Use plain language. Make each criterion observable in student work or talk. Do not add outcomes that are not supported by the reference. Flag any uncertainty rather than guessing.

Treat the result as a draft. The teacher decides whether the intention is appropriately narrow for the lesson and whether the criteria are accessible to the students.

Step 3: Build the teaching sequence

A useful lesson sequence makes the movement from explanation to student thinking visible. Ask for a structure such as:

  1. Connect and prepare: activate prior knowledge and state the purpose.
  2. Explicit teaching: model the new concept or process with a worked example.
  3. Check understanding: ask a question that reveals reasoning, not only recall.
  4. Guided practice: let students practise with prompts and feedback.
  5. Independent or collaborative application: ask students to use the learning.
  6. Reflect and assess: collect a short piece of evidence and identify a next step.

AI can suggest questions, examples and transitions. It cannot decide whether your modelling is accurate or whether the pace suits your class. Check examples for mathematical accuracy, factual accuracy and age appropriateness.

Ask it to include likely misconceptions and teacher responses, but do not accept a generic list without considering your students. A misconception is useful when it helps you choose an example, question or representation.

Step 4: Ask for assessment that matches the learning

Assessment should be connected to the learning intention and success criteria. Ask the AI to propose one formative check during the lesson and one short end-of-lesson task. For each, request:

  • the prompt or task
  • what a teacher should look or listen for
  • a likely correct response
  • a common error or misconception; and
  • the next instructional move

This turns “assessment” from a decorative heading into something you can use. For the fraction example, an exit check might ask students to compare two fractions and explain their reasoning with a diagram or sentence. The appropriate evidence depends on what was taught, not on what is easiest to mark.

For secondary subjects, include the language of the relevant achievement standard or syllabus outcome where appropriate. Avoid claiming that a one-lesson task proves mastery of an entire standard.

Step 5: Add differentiation and access choices

Now ask for adjustments that preserve the learning goal. Useful options may include:

  • concrete materials or visual representations
  • a vocabulary bank and sentence stems
  • a worked example with selected steps removed
  • strategic pairing or teacher conferencing
  • an alternative way to record an explanation; and
  • an extension that asks students to generalise, justify or apply

Review every suggestion for your class. “Give a simpler worksheet” is not a complete adjustment. The plan should explain what support changes and what remains constant. It should also avoid making assumptions about disability, language background or home access to technology.

Step 6: Generate the resources

Once the plan is sound, use AI to create only the resources that serve it. Ask for a slide sequence, worksheet, task cards, worked examples or teacher notes that use the same learning intention and success criteria.

Give the generator constraints:

  • Australian spelling and classroom terminology
  • the number of slides or pages
  • font size and readability requirements
  • space for student responses
  • no unsupported facts or fabricated sources
  • an answer guide where useful; and
  • accessible alternatives where a task relies on images, sound or fine motor skills

Read the resources as a teacher and as a student. Are instructions unambiguous? Is there enough space? Are diagrams accurate? Does the slide deck reveal an answer too early? Is the worksheet testing the intended learning rather than reading stamina or formatting skills?

If a resource includes an external source, image or quotation, verify its origin and permission to reuse it. Keep a human review step before sharing material with students.

Step 7: Verify the curriculum connection

Return to the official curriculum page and complete a final alignment check. Ask:

  • Does the activity teach the selected content, or merely mention it?
  • Do the success criteria describe evidence of that content?
  • Is the achievement standard used at an appropriate level?
  • Are capabilities or priorities included because they add value, rather than for decoration?
  • Would another teacher understand why each activity is in the sequence?

Record the version you checked. Curriculum websites and school programs change; a clear reference makes later review easier.

Then draft a matching slide outline and student task. Use Australian spelling. Do not invent curriculum codes, sources or student information. Mark anything that needs teacher verification as REVIEW.
