Check the curriculum model, not just the marketing language
“Curriculum aligned” can mean several different things. Ask exactly which curriculum or syllabus the product supports, what version it uses, and how the alignment is shown.
For Australian Curriculum planning, start with the official Australian Curriculum website. Australian Curriculum Version 9.0 presents learning areas, general capabilities and cross-curriculum priorities. A useful planning tool should help you identify the relevant achievement standard and content description, rather than simply attach a broad subject label to a generated activity.
For a state-based classroom, check whether the tool can reflect local requirements. A NSW teacher may need a NESA syllabus outcome and content point. A Victorian teacher may need Victorian Curriculum F–10 Version 2.0 content descriptions and achievement standards. Those are not interchangeable labels.
Ask whether the product:
- lets you select year level, subject and curriculum version
- records the selected code or reference in the plan
- distinguishes an achievement standard from a content description, elaboration, outcome or capability
- makes it easy to open the source reference and verify the wording; and
- allows you to edit an alignment when your school sequence uses a different emphasis
No tool should ask you to accept alignment on trust. Treat generated curriculum references as a starting point and confirm them against the official source.
Look for a planning workflow, not a chatbot box
A chatbot can produce an attractive paragraph in seconds. Lesson planning, however, involves decisions that should remain visible: what students already know, what they will learn, how the teacher will model it, what students will do, and what evidence will show progress.
A practical AI lesson planner should capture enough context to make those decisions useful. Look for fields or prompts for:
- learning intention and success criteria
- prior knowledge and likely misconceptions
- lesson duration and available equipment
- explicit teaching or modelling
- guided and independent practice
- checks for understanding
- formative assessment and an exit task
- adjustments for students who need more support or extension; and
- the resources needed for each phase
The output should be editable. You may need to change the amount of teacher talk, swap a group task for individual work, or remove an activity that does not suit your classroom. If the only way to improve a plan is to start a new chat, the tool may save less time than it appears to save.
Confirm what “resources included” really means
Some products create a plan only. Others can produce a presentation, printable worksheet, worked examples, vocabulary support or an assessment prompt as part of the same workflow. That can be valuable, because the hand-off between planning and resource creation often takes a large part of preparation time.
Before choosing, ask to see a complete example. Check whether the presentation follows the sequence of the plan, whether the worksheet has clear instructions, and whether answer guidance or teacher notes are supplied when appropriate. Check that Australian spelling, units, examples and classroom language are used.
A resource generator must also be honest about its limitations. Images, quotations, external links and factual examples need review. Copyright and licensing still apply. A tool that gives you a fast draft is helpful; it is not a substitute for checking whether you can legally share the finished resource with students or colleagues.
Test differentiation without lowering expectations
Differentiation is more than adding “easier questions” and “harder questions”. A good plan can vary scaffolding, representation, grouping, vocabulary, worked examples, response mode and the level of independence while keeping the core learning meaningful.
Try a realistic prompt with a mixed-readiness class. Ask the tool for:
- a concise vocabulary or concept pre-teach
- a worked example and a partially completed example
- prompts for students who are ready to explain or apply the idea in a new context
- an accessible way to demonstrate learning; and
- teacher observations that will help you decide the next step
Read the result carefully. Does it make assumptions about students’ language, disability, cultural background or access to technology? Does it treat a student profile as a label rather than a planning consideration? Does it keep the learning goal clear? If not, the output needs substantial professional judgement—or the product may not be a good fit.
Ask how privacy and student data are handled
This is one of the most important checks. Do not put identifiable student information into an AI tool unless your school or system has explicitly approved that use and the product’s data practices are understood.
Read the privacy policy and terms. Find out:
- what information is collected from teachers and students
- whether prompts and outputs are used to train a model
- where data is stored and processed
- how long content is retained
- whether data is shared with subcontractors
- how an account or workspace can be deleted; and
- what controls exist for school administrators
A tool designed for school use should make privacy information easy to find. It should support a workflow based on de-identified, general class information. For a deeper due-diligence process, schools and suppliers can review the Safer Technologies 4 Schools (ST4S) framework and readiness process. ST4S is not a quality badge to claim casually, and completing a readiness check does not equal full assessment. It is a useful reminder that privacy, security and organisational controls matter alongside classroom features.
Make sure the teacher remains the decision-maker
AI can suggest a sequence, but it cannot see the room, hear a student’s explanation or know what happened in yesterday’s lesson. The teacher must be able to accept, reject and rewrite every important part of the output.
Look for controls that make professional judgement easy:
- editable text rather than locked templates
- the ability to regenerate one section without losing the rest
- a way to provide your own curriculum reference or school template
- clear separation between generated content and teacher-entered notes; and
- export options that work with your existing planning and presentation workflow
Beware of a product that presents uncertain information with certainty. The more authoritative an AI answer sounds, the more important it is to verify curriculum codes, dates, facts and links before using it.
Check the classroom practicality
A good plan is usable on a busy Tuesday, not only impressive in a demonstration. Test how long it takes to go from a blank page to a lesson you would actually teach. Consider whether the tool works on the devices available at your school, whether the exported files are readable, and whether it remains useful when the internet is slow.
Check the price model carefully. Identify what is included in a free or trial plan, whether resource generation has limits, and whether billing is per teacher, school or workspace. Make sure the product explains prices in Australian dollars when relevant and tells you what happens to your content if you cancel.
Test with one real lesson
Do not evaluate an AI lesson planner using a vague prompt such as “make a Year 5 science lesson”. Use a lesson you know well. Include the curriculum reference, duration, class context, required resource format and the evidence you want to collect.
Then score the output against five questions:
- Is the curriculum reference correct and visible?
- Could I teach this sequence without rewriting every section?
- Are the activities and resources appropriate for my students and setting?
- Does the assessment show the intended learning?
- Did the tool save enough time to justify using it again?
Invite a colleague to review the result. A second pair of eyes often catches a hidden assumption, an over-ambitious sequence or a mismatch between the activity and the success criteria.
A sensible way to choose
An AI lesson planner should remove repetitive formatting and give you a strong first draft. It should not remove curriculum checking, privacy review or teacher expertise.
